Philip B. Lindy Scholar Program: Drexel University’s chapter of Engineers Without Borders, EWB, has been actively involved with the Philip B. Lindy Inner-City Public School Program. This Spring has been the first session of the program, and is made possible with gracious funding by local philanthropist, Philip B. Lindy. EWB has taken a roll as a volunteer organization, running one of the Saturday activities for the scholars in the program.
The first activity took place on April 18th where EWB and Drexel’s chapter of Sierra Club taught a group of 5th grade scholars the why and how of urban composting. The students were extremely receptive and actively took part in the lesson, getting their hands dirty and putting together their own shoebox sized compost bin. In the second activity, May 2nd, we showed the kids gardening. Taking the scholars to Drexel’s garden, located at 33rd and Race Street, we planted flowers in the Sierra Clubs plot. The scholars were shown the importance of weeding, tilling, planting, and watering their plants. The scholars were also given the opportunity to plant some pepper seeds into a flowerpot and take home their work so that they could see some of their hard work pay off in the form of a growing plant. In the upcoming weeks, EWB will be showing a group of scholars bridge building, and discussing the importance of sustainable technology and the use of sustainable materials. Please check back for updates of how the hard work of the members of EWB is providing local students unique opportunities and to hear what some of the students and EWB members have to say of their experiences.
